Want to Be a Better Defensive Driver?

Defensive driving is a way for you to be safer on the road, even when you’re not sure what other drivers are up to. Follow these tips from Keeton Auto Repair to practice being a better defensive driver.

Leave Plenty of Room between You and Other Vehicles

If you’re too close to other vehicles on the road, you don’t give yourself or those other drivers many options if something happens. It’s entirely possible that you or another driver could get caught with no option other than to get into a wreck. Nobody wants that, so the better idea is to leave yourself and other drivers lots of room.

Be Careful with Your Speed

Speed is a similar issue. If you’re traveling faster than you really should be, that shortens the amount of space you have to maneuver and can force you to have to respond more quickly to a dangerous situation. Speeding also causes you to have to stop short more often, which is rougher on your car.

Look Ahead a Bit

Part of being a defensive driver involves making sure you’re aware of what’s going on around you and your vehicle. That means looking a little ahead of immediately in front of you. You’ll be better able to respond when you’re being just that much more alert to your surroundings.

Let Other Drivers Know What You’re Up To

Ideally every driver would use their turn signals and other indicators regularly. It’s a good idea for you to do so, even if no one else is. But it’s also important to remember that just because another driver signals that they’re turning, for instance, they might decide at the last minute that they aren’t turning or they may not even be aware their indicator is on. Pay attention to what they actually do.
