What Do Those Warning Lights Mean?

If you’ve ever found yourself intimidated by dashboard warning lights, you’re not the only driver out there who feels that way. Keeton Auto Repair wants you to know that these lights are there to keep you informed, not to frighten you.

Temperature Light

Overheating is your car engine’s enemy. That’s why there are a few different fail-safes in place to help reduce the likelihood that the car might overheat. Your car can still run too hot, though, despite your best intentions. Keeping an eye on the temperature gauge, or at least paying attention if the temperature warning light comes on, helps to make sure that you don’t keep the car running if it’s getting too hot.

Battery Light

Your car’s engine needs an electrical boost to get it running, and that’s the job of the battery. If there’s a problem with the battery, nothing else is going to happen. That’s why it’s crucial to respond to possible battery issues as soon as you notice them. Often when you see the battery light come on, there’s already a big problem.

TPMS Light

The tire pressure monitoring system keeps track of the air pressure in your car’s tires. Each has a slightly different setup, but in general you should see the TPMS light if more than 10 percent of the air is out of one or more tires. You’ll also see this light if you have a flat tire.

Brake Light

If your car is going to run it also has got to stop. That is where the brakes come in and if they ever fail or the car’s computer detects anything wrong, you need to know about it. You will also see the brake light when you have the parking brake engaged, as a warning that you need to release it before you try to drive.

Check Engine Light

This warning light might be the scariest of them all. But it doesn’t have to be. The check engine light can show up because of serious engine issues, for sure, but not always. Sometimes the problem is an extremely minor issue, like a small exhaust problem, that eventually can cause big problems in the engine if you don’t get it fixed.
